Pakistan gets Article 19 – Freedom of Information

Advert for internet and phone package, Islamabad, 2009

Pakistani lawmakers have passed the  18th Amendment Bill, after Article 19, which grants that:

Every citizen shall have the right to have access to information in all matters of public importance subject to regulation and reasonable restriction imposed by the law.

Of course, legislating and delivering are two very different things. It remains to be seen how far this is taken. But it will be very interesting if government data starts being made available. In the US and the UK, efforts such as data.gov.uk and data.gov put government data online, and lead to fantastic uses. Check out Rewired State for some exciting uses.

When will data.gov.pk emerge?
